Halloween in New Hampshire

Quite a damp Halloween last night. My youngest went as Robin Hood and by the time she returned with her friends, for what will no doubt be her last trick or treat around the Walpole Common, the feather in the hat for her costume was drooping down over her face. One last major candy haul before the end of middle school.

The mist, the wind and the pouring rain today seems a fitting tribute to All Soul's Day. If the howling noise continues I may have steal the candy haul and burrow under the duvet for the day. At least the chicken water buckets don't need filling.

Stephanie's Simmered Mushrooms

Wild mushrooms are abundant in the fall up here in the Connecticut River Valley. And it's a perfect day for a bowl of mushrooms simmered in butter and wine, infused with salt and lemongrass and accompanied by some really crispy bread:

1. In a high sided pan fry a medley of forest mushrooms in butter, olive oil and salt
2. Once their skin starts to crisp up, pour in some white wine to cover, add pepper and a lemon grass stalk if available, otherwise fresh ginger root
3. Lower heat and simmer until much of the liquid is reduced

Serve with bread lavished with olive oil and lemon and quick broiled to crisp up.

Was driving home the other evening and the moon was rising fat and full above the tree line so I jumped out of the car to take a picture, which turned out pretty great, although I wish I had put the station wagon in park before I left it. It looks silly to chase a car.

The Forest Trail

The last field has been harvested and the silage is packed down hard. The corn cropper has been put away and won't be cutting the telephone line again until next year. Which is a relief. The forest trail was particularly beautiful today (hence the large photo above) and we are already feeling nostalgic for the beginning of the end of Fall.Last night, at dusk, the coyotes were howling in the ravine. Our brave dog Ivy (pictured here) was cowering under the bed and had to be coaxed out from under and given a few drops of Rescue Remedy to calm her down.
